Accomodation and Tourism in Pune

First a quick update. Our organizers or volunteers do not find accommodations either for attendees or speakers. We might in our individual capacity as friends help someone out but that is not something we do as a group. But we have a short post on somethings you can do if you are from outside Pune.

Accomodation

For staying in Pune, you could look at any options from either Fabhotels, Oyorooms , Ginger hotels depending upon your budget, convenience. If you are looking to stay near the conference, then would suggest to look for hotels in and around Baner .

If you don’t mind traveling and want to see more of the city, you could look at hotels near ‘Koregaon Park’ , ‘Deccan Gymkhana’ or if you want to experience old world charm then look for hotels near ‘Laxmi Road’ , ‘Shaniwar Peth’ , ‘Kasba Peth’ and surrounding areas.

Pune is also home to YMCA so if you are either a YMCA member or love that atmosphere, ambience that is also possible.

Tourism in Pune

If you are in Pune and you want to explore Pune, there are quite a few options to see Pune in its glory. One option is to go for heritage walks which are organized by quite a few private travel companies and a non-profit. Intach usually does a heritage walk, a stories walk and couple of other walks on the second or third weekend like this.

If you want to explore the city by Bus there are Pune Darshan buses both by Pune Muncipal Corporation and private tour companies. There is also no shortage of things to do in Pune after WordCamp so make sure to get the some idea of what the city is and has to offer after WordCamp is over.

The heritage walk could be organized but needs to have at least 15 odd people who would be interested in that and would cost INR 500/- apart from refreshments and any other expenses. All the proceeds go to intach for their heritage conservation activities.

Shining a light on Pune’s FOSS communities

Credits

As WordCamp Pune is only 2 weeks away, we wanted to shine some light on the open-source friendly places and communities around Pune.

First we want to do a shoutout to Pune WordPress Knowledge Exchange.

The meetup group behind this WordCamp, we love spreading the word about WordPress as a publishing platform.

Here are some other open source friendly communities around the city of Pune.

  • Mozilla Pune – While mozilla is more famously known for its browser, these group of individuals looks into various aspects such as privacy, security, javascript, scalable apps. , front-end and back-end development using foss tools.
  • PythonPune – While there are more than a few groups on and about Python, this is one of the larger communities.
  • Reserved-bit hackerspace – It’s a hackerspace so deals in both free software, especially linux kernel meetups, sometimes meetups on gcc or ulibc and has a place where people could hack on electronics using Arduino or Raspberry Pi, beagleboard etc.
  • ReactJS and Friends – While there are at the very least 3-4 groups or more about Javascript Technologies on meetup.com.
  • Technowise – The meetup topics are varied and interesting and touches on many interesting and varied foss technologies
  • Agile Testing Alliance – Pune Chapter – While strictly not a foss platform, Agile testing is a methodology increasingly used by many FOSS developers and FOSS teams to give more value to businesses and business solutions. Most of the workshops are around FOSS products .

I am sure there are more and drop them in your comments.

Call for Volunteers for WordCamp Pune

A WordCamp is a conference which is organized entirely by volunteers. To pull off another great WordCamp, we are looking for volunteers.

About Volunteering

Are the tasks difficult?

No. Volunteering requires help with ticketing, sponsor wrangling, marketing and spreading the word, writing content, help with design and more. On the day of the event a lot of volunteers are needed to do basic event management tasks.

Do I need to be WordPress expert?

Volunteers do not need to be WordPress experts at all. A lot of folks in the past have started volunteering as a gateway to learning more about the WordPress community.

At the Event:

Help us work with vendors, speakers and participants to help everything go smoothly. We need volunteers to work with speakers and help them out while they are conducting a session, or helping people with directions to the event or offering help with transport options and more.

Why should you volunteer?

  • Respect & credits in the community.
  • Inside view & experience of organizing the WordCamp in India.
  • An opportunity to work or interact with and learn from leaders in the Indian WordPress ecosystem.

Let us know that you’d like to jump onboard by completing the application below:

Call for Volunteers is closed now.

Thank you for your interest though. We hope to see you at WordCamp Pune! 🙂

Call for Sponsors

WordCamp Pune 2019 is an event to be held on 16th February 2019, at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune (IISER Pune). This Multi track event will include speaker sessions, lightning talks, Workshops and more. The Auditorium and Classrooms have a large foyer on the ground floor which will be used for networking and have the sponsor stalls.

WordCamp Pune is part of a network of WordCamps internationally, and is a community-driven event where all the speakers, organizers and volunteers donate their time voluntarily with no monetary gains.

Last year, we had 400 participants from various countries and we are expecting the same number this year. We aim to make WordCamp Pune 2019 an even bigger success and are, again, looking for the help of generous sponsors.

Expected Participants are WordPress Users including Enthusiasts, Developers, Web Designers, bloggers and open source software supporters.

This is a great opportunity to support the WordPress community here in Pune. Sponsors enable us to have such a large venue, better facilities and most importantly create a great platform for educating ourselves on WordPress.

Sponsors played a vital role in making the conference available to so many people at an affordable rate and the event wouldn’t be possible without their support.

We have four different types of sponsorship slots. They are Administrator (Gold), Editor (Silver), Author (Bronze) and Subscriber (Friends).

Call for Speakers

We’re thrilled to announce that WordCamp Pune 2019 is officially accepting speaker applications!

WordCamp Pune is a chance for WordPress enthusiasts from Pune and nearby areas to understand the exploration of WordPresss through different people sharing their varied talents and perspectives. Developers, project managers, content creators, designers, support professionals, and more come together to talk about all things WordPress. This shows not only the incredible diversity of the WordPress community but also the versatility of WordPress itself.

WordCamp is a conference about WordPress, talks need to be about WordPress or related to WordPress in someway, but some generic content which would interest a WordPress User is also considered.

WordCamps are volunteer driven events and speaking is also considered a way of volunteering at the event, hence it isn’t a paid gig or linked with sponsorship in any way. In fact, speakers are expected to pay for their own travel and accommodation.

How long should your presentation be?

We are planning the following session formats:

  • Long talks – 30  minutes in total, breaking down to around 20-25 mins for talk & 10 mins for questions.
  • Lightning talks – 10 minutes each, grouped with related topics.
  • WorkShops – Have a great idea for a WordPress-related activity, could be a development of a plugin or child theme or shiny tiny Gutenberg block.

What topic should you apply with?

We accept ALL topics related to WordPress and beyond, and encourage them.

We have gathered an extensive list of ideas and topics our audience might be interested in on blog post for your inspiration. If you have a topic you’re passionate about or are an expert in something we haven’t mentioned, don’t hesitate to apply! We are accepting talks from all areas of expertise and are also hoping to attract relevant experts from outside the WordPress world.

We give preference to sessions in Hindi or Marathi along with English. We’ll be very happy if you speak in Hindi or Marathi

Multiple topics in mind? Not sure which one to choose? Why not submit them all? You just need to submit the form multiple times, once for each topic.

What is our application deadline?

The Call for Speakers will be open until January 28th, so please make sure that you send in your application in time.

Thank you for all who applied, Speaker Application is now Closed.

WordCamp Pune 2019 is over. Check out the next edition!
