Fairy Dharawat is going to grant your wish and make your blog readable!

Writers carry with them an immodest streak, this beauty to put words into thoughts is no doubt a wonderful skill, but it’s not magic, it’s nothing extraordinary. And that’s what this session is going to be, equipping you with tools to read and write better. It’s going to be about improving your readability quotient. It’s only after reading well is when can you write well for your blog. So if you’re looking to improve your writing, come! Here some handy tools will shared which can drastically affect your writing. It will also cover how to improve your reading speed which is important if you want to become a better writer.

What makes Fairy Dharawat take this session you may ask, humble reader. I say, not much. Honestly, she’s still figuring out how to become a good writer, and she does have depressing doubts over creative blocks, using best words and sentence formation. Even though she has been a writer for around 5 years, there is just so much to learn! Writing is all she knows, and there too she is learning, but she can be sure of one thing, if she was in another profession, she would’ve been fired long back. So she has a tiny bit of knowledge when it comes to putting one word after another. Also, she likes to think, she’s super fun to be around, so come to learn tips to read and write better from this self-confessed fun person.

Thank you for making the early bird experiment a success

The Organisers’ Problems

ChaosOne of the problems that we, as organisers, find hard to tackle is ticket sales. For various reasons, ticket sales don’t pick up till the last few days. A lot of vendors can’t be confirmed and a lot of arrangements remain pending because we don’t know how many people will actually end up buying tickets.

Yes, the last WordCamp Pune was houseful but it can be considered a one off incident looking at the history of WordCamps and even this selling out happened very close to the event. It gets very chaotic towards the end and we end up spending more time worrying about how much to arrange instead of actually arranging for things.

In the organiser utopia, all tickets should sell out at least 2-3 weeks before the event so we can make the best arrangements and preparations without falling short or wasting important things like food and other resources.

An Experiment

laboratory equipment

So, when we went to the orientation hangout with a WordCamp Deputy, we proposed this idea of having discounted early bird tickets. We got a go ahead for this experiment in the hope that if it works out, other WordCamps around the world may try something similar, if they are up for it.

Due to the recent demonetisation and other problems with managing money at WordCamps in India, we ended up starting ticket sales much later than we had planned and our ticketing schedule ended up being tighter than we had hoped for.

Even then, within one week of opening ticket sales, we are happy to announce that we have sold 140 tickets. That’s almost 1/3rd of our total capacity. We’re hoping that this tempo continues and we sell out before the 1st of Jan and every participant gets a t-shirt.

T-shirts and T-shirtless Tickets

Blank T-shirts

Any tickets bought after 31st December are not going to get a t-shirt because it takes at least 15 days to print and deliver t-shirts. 🙁

We want all our participants to go back with a wonderful WordCamp Pune t-shirt that reminds them of their experience and memories of this WordCamp for years to come!

So, this is a thank you to all of you who helped us organise things better by buying tickets in advance and not waiting till the last minute.

Special Thanks to Individual Sponsors

Individual Sponsors

Alexander Gounder & Amit Patekar are two awesome community members who decided to go for tickets priced way above the regular tickets, just to support WordCamp Pune 2017 and help the organisers out. This idea of micro-sponsoring is something that we borrowed from WCUS and we hope more community members give as much value to the event as these two do.

More sponsors like them make sure that we cover costs and still manage to give scholarships and discounts to people who at times can’t afford a regular ticket or need a little extra encouragement/ help in attending a WordCamp. If you happen to bump into them at WordCamp Pune 2017, do give them a high-five on our behalf! 🙂

Let’s Encrypt & make our websites HTTPS with Nancy Thanki

HTTPS is the present, not the future. With everyone including Google’s search algorithm’s insisting that our websites become secure by default, HTTPS is the way to go.

In the past, HTTPS was complicated, expensive and not available for all. That changed on December 3rd, 2015 when a service called Let’s Encrypt entered its public beta. Backed by several major sponsors, the service caught on quickly. As of summer 2016, more than 5 million SSL certificates had been issued by Let’s Encrypt, nearly four million of which were active and unexpired. Nancy Thanki, from Automattic is going to help all of us get started with Let’s Encrypt!

If you are not familiar, Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, open certificate authority that allows users to encrypt the data flowing to and from their websites easily and for free. The goal of Let’s Encrypt is to make data transfer over the internet secure by default. Towards that end, they have invested a considerable amount of time and energy in making it easy for users of all stripes to secure the data flowing in and out of their websites.

You may have already considered encrypting your website before — perhaps to perform better in search engines, or to gain the ability to accept payments on your website. Regardless of whether you’ve considered enabling SSL on your website or not, the goal of this talk is to demonstrate why encryption on your website matters. We will look at some practical examples and live demos of what data can be stolen from your website, even if you are using an encrypted wifi connection. Likewise, we’ll talk about how encryption of all websites — whether they’re dealing with sensitive information or not — makes the web a safer place for all of us.

Last, of course, we will look at how you can get started with Let’s Encrypt on your website. We’ll review the options available to you on common hosting providers, as well as walk through the steps for how you can set this up for yourself, if you have administrative access to your server.

If you already have Let’s Encrypt enabled on your site, this talk may be basic for you (although we’ll do a few cool demos that make for great party tricks, so feel free to stop by).

If you’ve never accessed your hosting provider’s website admin area (CPanel, Plesk, etc), this talk might be a bit hard for you to follow (although you should totally come and ask questions both during the presentation and after).

If you have a website and you’ve thought about enabling SSL on it but you just haven’t gotten around to it yet, this talk will be perfect for you. By the end of this presentation, you should not only know how to enable encryption on your website, but you will understand why it’s so important that you do.

It sounds like an intimidating topic, but we can do this. Come on and let’s encrypt!

Utsav Singh Rathour will help us make the most out of WordCamps

India is set to see a rise in the number of WordCamps in 2017 to at least five. There’s already a long running WordCamp in our neighbourhood in Nepal. WordCamps are increasing the world over and more and more of us are attending more and more WordCamps.

That’s where Utsav comes in with his session to help us make the most out of our WordCamp experience. Even if you’re not able to apply your takeaways from this session at WordCamp Pune, we’re sure his tips and ideas will be useful when you attend WordCamp Udaipur a fortnight later or the recently confirmed WordCamp Kochi in February or even the oldest running WordCamp in India, WordCamp Mumbai in March.

Utsav’s flying in all the way from Nepal to share his experiences and aren’t we glad he chose the right time to do this. Thank you, neighbour! 🙂

  5. All you have to do is complete all the tasks and answer all the questions.
  6. We’ll be playing this dedicatedly between 10:00 am and 10:20 am on the day of the event. See: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11y8yI9WDqDgRt0Eam3ozC3J194Y-LH-SUzkHQr_cU30/edit#gid=0
